Bamboo Room and Pioneer Bar
Haines AlaskaOpen Year Round in the Heart of Downtown
Welcome to the home away from home for many locals and visitors. Bob and Christy took over the business in 1991 when Christy’s parents, Marty & Helen Tengs, retired after 40 years. As Marty always said, “You’re a stranger here but once.”
We hope you will enjoy our All-American menu, famous halibut & chips and friendly service at the Bamboo Room, where being out to lunch is a good thing.
Pioneer Bar
A Famed Haines Destination
The Pioneer Bar is known for its colorful history as Lou LaMoore’s combination bar, brothel and bootlegging concern during Prohibition for the benefit of troops stationed at nearby Fort William H. Seward. Today, it is a contemporary, vibrant place where people share a drink, shoot pool, watch sporting events, unleash their talents at Open Mic Night, Karaoke, and Trivia Nights, dance to music by bands from all around the world, and, most importantly, have a good time.
Bamboo Room Restaurant
An American diner with a “best seafood dive” reputation
It all started with a bamboo curtain in 1953 to separate it from the The Pioneer Bar, which was purchased in 1953 by Marty Tengs, an iron worker who moved from Eugene, Oregon to Alaska in 1940. Owned and operated by Marty’s daughter Christy and her husband Bob Fowler since 1991, the Bamboo Room Restaurant is now known far and wide as serving the best halibut fish and chips in Alaska.
Haines Alaska
Located on a peninsula at the upper end of the Lynn Canal, Haines is a small town of 2500 residents who revere the history and pristine wilderness of one of the most beautiful places on the planet. It is considered one of the best small towns in America and has been featured in National Geographic Explorer’s “Top Ten Places to Live,” Outside Magazine’s “Top Twenty,” and USA Today’s “Top Ten Places with Big Back Yards.” It is often featured on Discovery Channel’s Gold Rush, National Geographic Wild’s Dr. Oakley, Yukon Vet, and DIY’s Building Alaska. When people visit Haines, many remark “Why did it take me so long to come here?” And then they inquire about real estate.
